A softbox is a light modifier made of a reflective fabric enclosure with a translucent diffuser on the front. It turns a small light into a larger, softer source, giving gentler shadows and smoother highlights on reflective surfaces.

  • Diffusion: Scattering light through a translucent material to make it softer and more even.
  • Reflector: A surface that bounces light back onto the subject to fill shadows; also the dish fitted to a light.
  • Strobe: A studio flash that emits a very short, powerful burst of light, freezing motion.
  • Flag: An opaque panel that blocks light from reaching part of the scene or the lens.
